CONSOLIDATION OR CLOSING OF SCHOOLS Policy Code: 9410
The board will maintain and operate existing school facilities in a prudent and fiscally sound manner. Declining enrollments, population shifts, building obsolescence or other reasons may require that the board consider closing or consolidating school facilities or converting them for uses other than a school. When considering action to close or consolidate schools or to convert existing school facilities to uses other than a school, the following will apply:
- The procedures set forth in G.S. 115C-72 will be followed.
- The superintendent shall keep the board informed of situations that may lead to the possible closing or consolidation of schools or the conversion of school facilities for non-school uses.
- Public notice of no less than 30 calendar days will be given prior to a meeting at which the final action closing a school is scheduled to occur.
- Citizen input will be allowed and considered, in accordance with G.S. 115C-72, through one or more public hearings held in advance of a final decision by the board.
