HOMEWORK  Policy Code:   3135

The board recognizes the importance of homework in supplementing classroom instruction and furthering the goals of the educational program. Homework reinforces learning and stimulates independence, responsibility and self-direction.

Homework assignments should strengthen and provide practice in skills which already have been taught in class. Teachers should make every effort to give clear directions for homework assignments and should provide students an opportunity to ask questions about the assignment before going on to another activity. Teachers should also take into consideration the differences in financial, educational and technological resources of students and their parents or guardians when making assignments and should minimize the use of homework assignments or projects which will involve the expenditure of funds by a student. In addition, homework assignments should improve a student’s ability to work independently. Assignments also should be reasonable in the amount of time necessary to complete the tasks in light of the age and maturity of students and other assignments given to the students.

Principals will be responsible for ensuring that homework assignments are made in accordance with this policy. Principals are encouraged to involve staff, parents and students in developing guidelines for standards of appropriate homework for the school or particular grade levels.
